Marseille

Marseille (English pronunciation: /mɑːrˈs/; French: [maʁ.sɛj], locally: [mɑχˈsɛjə]; Occitan: Marselha [maʀˈsejɔ, maʀˈsijɔ]), also known as Marseilles in English, is a city in France. The capital of its department of Bouches-du-Rhône and region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, Marseille is located on France's south coast and is the second largest city in France, after Paris, with a population of 852,516 (January 2012) on a land area of 241 km2 (93 sq mi). It is the 3rd-largest metropolitan area in France after Paris and Lyon, with a population of 1,831,500 at the January 2011 census.

Known to both the ancient Greeks and Romans as Massalia (Greek: Μασσαλία, Massalía), Marseille was historically the most important trade center in the region and functioned as the main trade port of the French Empire. Marseille is France's largest city on the Mediterranean coast and largest commercial port as well as a leading cruise port and freight port. The city held the title of European Capital of Culture together with Košice, Slovakia, in 2013. In 2016, it will host the European Football Championship and become the European Capital of Sport in 2017.

  • Marseille (band)

Marseille are a British heavy metal band from Liverpool, England.

    History

Marseille formed in Liverpool in early 1976, and released their debut album, Red, White and Slightly Blue on the Mountain Records label in 1978. Original members were Paul Dale (vocals), Neil Buchanan (guitar), Andy Charters (guitar), Keith Knowles (drums) and Steve Dinwoodie (bass). Marseille were the first band to win "UK Battle of the Bands" with the finals judged by Brian May and Roger Taylor of Queen at Wembley Arena on 31 October 1977.

Marseille gathered a small fan base while promoting their first album as support for other groups such as Judas Priest, Nazareth, Whitesnake and UFO. Their debut album contained very raunchy lyrics but suffered somewhat from lack of promotion and limitation of release. The single "Kiss Like Rock 'n' Roll" was produced by Nazareth guitarist Manny Charlton.

    Holding On To Letting Go

    by: Marcel

Here we are, the two of us together
Don't know where we end or where we start
    Been through so many stages
But we're on two different pages
Maybe we're just better off apart
    CHORUS:
It's so hard to say goodbye
We'll throw down the gloves and in the towel
    Just let it ride
It's so hard cause we both know
When the curtain falls and the bloom is off the rose
We're just holding on to letting go
And who knows, will it be for the better?
Maybe it'll be for the worse
Though I try to love you
And I want to make it work
All it does is make me hurt
    CHORUS
Did we get enough, or expect too much?
Do we tough it out, or just give up?
    CHORUS
    We're just holding on
